Books 2005

31 Dec

Summary:

  • I wrote comments about 13 books
  • I read 4 romance novels, 4 literary fiction novels, 2 fantasy novels, 2 detective novels, and 1 historical novel
  • I finished 12 books, 1 was left unfinished
  • I read a few non-fiction books not mentioned on this blog

Altogether not a good reading year.

“Favourites”:

  • Judith Ivory – Untie my Heart
  • David Lodge – Author, Author

Special mention:

  • Jo Beverley – The Shattered Rose: for being a close second to Judith Ivory’s Untie my Heart
  • Jacqueline Carey – Banewreaker: The Sundering I: for turning the fantasy formula on its head by telling the story from the badies POV
  • Italo Calvino – If on a Winter’s Night a Traveller: for the concept behind it
  • Laura Kinsale – The Hidden Heart: for the way standard romance elements are (sometimes) transformed by Kinsale’s writing – interesting

Favourite Cover:

  • it’s not really fair since I only have a few books for each genre and to choose across genre … but here goes:

Philippa Gregory – The Virgin’s Lover

Favourite first sentence(s):

  • “Murderers do not usually give their victims notice.”
    P. D. James – A Certain Justice
  • “It is said, in Imardin, that the wind has a soul, and that it wails through the narrow city streets because it is grieved by what is finds there.”
Trudi Canavan – The Magicians’ Guild: The Black Magician Trilogy 1
